Nellai College of Engineering

Mechanical Department Laboratories

Engineering Practices Laboratory

Objective: To introduce the students the concepts of some basic manufacturing processes and fabrication techniques, such as metal casting, metal joining, metal forming and plastics component manufacture.

Manufacturing Technology Laboratory

Objective: To give practical hands on exposure to students in the various metal cutting operations using commonly used machine tools. The facilities in the shop are being used for other department project and maintenance work in addition to the main curriculum work.

Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Laboratory

Objective: The student is introduced to the mechanics of fluids through a thorough understanding of the properties of the fluids. The dynamics of fluids is introduced through the control volume approach which gives an integrated understanding of the transport of mass, momentum and energy. The applications of the conservation of laws to flow through pipes and hydraulics machines are studied.

Strength of Materials Laboratory

Objectives: Understand the concepts of stress, strain, principal stresses and principal planes, study the concept of shearing force and bending moment due to external loads in determinate beams and their effect on stresses, determine stresses and deformation in circular shafts and helical spring due to torsion, compute slopes and deflections in determinate beams by various methods and study the stresses and deformations induced in thin and thick shells.

Metrology and Measurements Laboratory

Objective: To understand the basic principles of measurements and to learn the various linear and angular measuring equipments, their principle of operation and applications and learn about various methods of measuring mechanical parameters.

To familiar with different measurement equipments and use of this industry for quality inspection.

Measure the gear tooth dimensions, angle using sine bar, straightness and flatness, thread parameters, temperature using thermocouple, force, displacement, torque and vibration.

Calibrate the vernier, micrometer and slip gauges and setting up the comparator for the inspection.

Dynamics Laboratory

Objective: To supplement the principles learnt in kinematics and dynamics of machinery and to understand how certain measuring devices are used for dynamic testing.

Thermal Engineering Laboratory

Objective: To apply the thermodynamic concepts into various thermal application like IC Engines, Steam Turbines, Compressors and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems.

Mechatronics Laboratory

Objective: To apply the thermodynamic concepts into various thermal application like IC Engines, Steam Turbines, Compressors and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems.

CAD Laboratory

Objective: To apply the thermodynamic concepts into various thermal application like IC Engines, Steam Turbines, Compressors and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems.
